Fire Extinguishers

RECYCLE

Fire Extinguishers can be recycled.

Please take them to the Hove recycling site. See Recycling sites for locations and opening times.

N.B. Fire extinguishers are not accepted at the Brighton recycling site.

Fireworks

Fireworks cannot be recycled.

Used fireworks are safe to dispose of in with your normal refuse but we would advise you to soak them in water overnight to ensure there is no chance of them re-igniting.

Unused fireworks cannot be taken to recycling centres, and should be returned to where you brought them from.

Fish

REDUCE RE-USE

If you are going to buy fish then please try to buy conscientiously. The fact is we are taking too many fish from our oceans. Try to buy fish from a retailer that can tell you where the fish was bought - and buy fish that aren't under threat.

Look out for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue ecolabel - check out their Sustainable seafood product finder or The Marine Conservation Society's ratings.

You can also find some helpful information on the Greenpeace website.

Local suppliers of fish include Jems Fresh Fish and Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales.

Foil

REDUCE RE-USE RECYCLE

Aluminium foil can be recycled.

There are local opportunities however it cannot be included in your kerbside collection.

You can bring foil to The Green Centre but please bring at least a carrier bag full.  The aluminium foil must be clean.  Alternatively take your cleaned foil to a local scrap dealer and cash in to raise funds for yourself or a charity. Approximately £36 million worth of aluminium is landfilled every year.

Not only should aluminium foil be recycled, its production should be limited through re-use. If You Care make 100% recycled aluminium foil.  When producing recycled aluminium 95% less energy is used than when producing primary aluminium.

It is widely available locally from "Down to Earth" on Portland Road in Hove and "Infinity Foods" on North Road in Brighton.  You can get 12 metres x 30cm wide foil and 7.01 metres x 40cm wide thicker, stronger foil.

Food

REDUCE RE-USE RECYCLE

Food can be reused.

The 1st question;  are you a resident or a business?

Household

The best way to avoid food waste is by menu planning. If you do have left over food get good at using leftovers to create new meals.

Business

Check out the Real Junk Food Project. They are a global, organic network of pay as you feel cafes. They divert food destined for waste and use it to create delicious and healthy meals.

Check out Foodcycle. They run volunteer-powered community projects across the UK – all working to reduce food poverty and social isolation by serving tasty, nutritious meals to vulnerable people.

Food waste

RECYCLE

Food waste can be recycled.

If you're a householder with a garden consider getting a compost bin for uncooked food waste or better still, a Green Johanna for all your food waste including cooked food - find out more on our Composting pages.

If you work in the commercial food sector consider using PaperRound's separate food waste collection scheme.

Foreign Currency

RE-USE RECYCLE

Coins or notes left over from a foreign holiday can be put to good use.

Please bring them to the Green Centre even if you only have a few coins. We will add them to an on-going collection and send them to Survival, an organisation supporting tribal people throughout the world to defend their land.

We can also accept foreign currency no longer in circulation and British currency no longer in circulation.

There is currently £540 million worth of foreign currency spread around the world.
