Tetra-Pak

RECYCLE

Tetra-Paks (cartons) can be recycled. Check out this video to see how. There are local opportunities.

Magpie Recycling Ltd run an opt-in scheme.  Please wash out your tetra-packs.  If you cut the sides you can flatten them easily and fit more in a bag.  If you live in a single household, ask your neighbours / friends / colleagues if they would like to share the cost.  Call Magpie on  01273 684425 for more details.

Textiles

RE-USE

Textiles can be recycled.

We accept any textiles at the Green Centre including items which are ripped, stained or in a very poor condition. Items which are not able to be sold will be recycled through our textiles recycling partner where EVERY piece will be used in some way.

By purchasing 2nd hand clothing and textiles at car boot sales or charity shops you are reducing demand for new items.

Recycling 1kg of textiles saves:

- 3.6kg of Co2 emissions
- 6000 litres of water
- 0.3kg of fertilizers
- 0.2kg of pesticides.

RE-USE RECYCLE

Timber can be recycled.

You can take your timber to either the Brighton or Hove recycling sites.  See Recycling Sites for locations and opening times.

Tools

Tools can be re-used through Workaid, including carpentry tools, plumbing tools, motor mechanic tools, masonry & bricklaying tools, metalwork & engineering tools, electrician's and power tools, cobbler's, leatherwork & upholstery tools, blacksmith's tools and welding tools.

Workaid tackles poverty in developing countries by supplying disadvantaged people with the tools they need to earn a living.  

They collect unwanted items from all over the UK, repair them and send them to vocational training projects, mostly in East Africa.  They have an efficient network of 100 volunteers who co-ordinate tools collections. 

So if you have tools to donate, please phone 01494 775220 or email admin@workaid.org and you will be put in touch with your nearest area organiser.

Consumables can be re-used through Workaid, including nails, screws, nuts & bolts, ironmongery, solder & flux

Gardening tools can be re-used through Workaid, including spades, shovels, forks, shears, hand trowels & forks, long handled hoes, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, watering cans, sprayers, water pumps and hosepipes.

Typewriters

RE-USE

Typewriters can be re-used through Workaid including manual; large desktop and small portable (if less than 30 years old) and electrical; desktop (less than 25 years old). All machines must have instruction manuals. They also accept ribbons, cartridges and manuals.

Alternatively you can bring them to the Green Centre and we will add them to our collection which is heading for Workaid.

Tyres

RECYCLE

Tyres can be recycled.

Please take it them to the Hove recycling site. See Recycling Sites for locations and opening times.

N.B. Tyres are not accepted at the Brighton recycling site.

Tassimo Pods and packaging

RECYCLE

Tassimo pods and packaging can be recycled through the Green Centre, Brighton. The pods are processed and made into ash trays, bricks, railway sleepers, shipping pallets and park benches.

Prepare for recycling

  • Please put pods and packaging in a carrier bag.
  • Please do not overfill the carriers so the pods / packaging spills out

Drop off

  • At the Green Centre stall at Brighton Open Market on Thursdays between 9and 5. ALWAYS check our Facebook page to check we are there.
  • There is a cardboard collection bin outside the Food Shed at Brighton Open Market which is accessible 7 days a week.

Twigs

Twigs can be recycled.

For £52 a year you can sign up to Brighton and Hove's Garden Waste collection. You will be given a 240 litre wheelie bin for your garden waste which will be collected every two weeks.

You can include;

  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge cuttings
  • Leaves
  • Plants
  • Tree cuttings
  • Twigs

You can bring any brand of toothbrush, including electric and battery toothbrush heads, and the outer packaging from the toothbrush, to the Green Centre at the Open Market on a Thursday between 9am and 5pm.

Toothpaste tubes and caps and cartons can be recycled. There is a local scheme.

You can bring any brand of toothpaste tube and cap and carton to the Green Centre at the Open Market on a Thursday between 9am and 5pm.
