Green A to Z - Plastic - Brighton & Hove Council

Some plastic can be recycled with Brighton & Hove City Council. This service is funded by your Council Tax and forms part of the Council recycling scheme.

NEXT STOP for plastic recycling: MAGPIE RECYCLING

The council accept PLASTIC BOTTLES ONLY. See below for how to prepare them;

  • MILK BOTTLES;  Wash. Squash. PLACE THE LID INSIDE. This is because when baled the plastic milk bottle tops pop off easily.
  • ALL OTHER BOTTLES: Wash. Squash. RETURN THE LID & SCREW ON TIGHTLY.

Please note: Including other plastics in the collection can lead to contamination. There is very little margin for contamination, it varies from 1 - 10% depending on the material. If the levels of contamination veer over the threshold instead of being recycled it will have to be incinerated for energy recovery.It costs the council £65 a tonne to recycle plastic BUT £165 a tonne to incinerate it.
