1. Local actions Our founder worked in a Therapeutic Community [TC] between 1990 and 1993 and went on to set up and run a TC btween 1997 and 2002. This is a model of treatment based on family and community. They are places where the social relationships, structure of the day and different activities together are all deliberately designed to help people’s health and well-being. Some of these ideas can easily be transferred to the work place:
in 2009 when the Green Centre opened at 39 Manor Hill it was designed based on ideas borrowed from Therapeutic Communities in order to create a supportive environment for the volunteer team, many of whom have acute and chronic health conditions.
in 2009, we had 2 permanent volunteers and 2 casual volunteers diagnosed with Systemic Lupus all of whom processed our milk bottle top recycling scheme. We decided to donate the funds raised through their hard work to a charity supporting people with Lupus and at the same time raise awareness of this lesser known condition. Originally we supported Lupus UK and then Lupus Brighton and Hove.
2. National actions
we support Lupus UK, a charity which oversees a network of support groups across the UK. When our milk bottle top recycling shceme ended in July 2021 we made our final donation to Lupus UK.
3. Global actions Our connections focus solely on health chairities who can benfit from our Zero Waste reuse and recycling programme.
historically we have supported Vision Aid Overseas through our glasses recycling scheme. They work in Ghana, Zambia, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. Sadly this programme ended in 2020.
historically we have supported Sound Seekers through our hearing aid recycling scheme. Sadly this programme ended in 2020.
in 2012 we began supporting Inter Care, a charity which collects surplus healthcare goods and medicines in the UK and sends regular consignments to health care units in sub-Saharan Africa. They don't accept items from the general public BUT you can help by encouraging your GP surgery or local hospital ward to register with Inter Care.
