Fairtrade

"Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives" - Fairtrade Foundation

Fairtrade Foundation

The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation that focuses on four key areas of work in the UK:

  • to license the use of the FAIRTRADE Mark in the UK
  • to help to grow demand for Fairtrade products and empower producers to sell to traders and retailers
  • to find new ways of working with partners to support producer organisations and their networks
  • to raise public awareness of the need for Fairtrade and the significant role of Fairtrade in making trade fair

Faith School Busia

In 2016 the Green Centre was approached by Rachelle Watkins, a Hove resident, seeking support for Faith School Busia in Uganda. She had written to hundreds of organisations and the Green Centre was the first to respond. Rachelle wanted to source school equipment and toys for her school and the Green Centre responded by donating a car full of equipment. Friends of the Green Centre went on to provide sponsorship for students. The Green Centre continue to support Faith School. Learn more.

Food miles

Food miles is the distance food is transported from the time of its production until it reaches the consumer. Food miles are one factor used when assessing the environmental impact of food, including the impact on global warming. The concept of food miles originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom. Frack Off

Frack Off is a grassroots direct action campaign aimed at stopping the extraction of unconventional resources in the UK, specifically concentrating on unconventional gas extraction. We have not provided a link as it is currently showing as an unsafe link.

Fracking

Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing, is an unconventional mining method to extract oil and natural gas trapped in geological layers within rock formations called shale.

The fracking process starts by drilling down to reach a shale rock layer deep underground. Once there, the drill can punch through the shale rock horizontally to get as much coverage as possible. Then, water mixed with sand and chemicals is pumped down at very high pressures to break up the shale rock. This releases the gas which then flows back up the bore hole to the surface.

Fracking bans

A number of environmental issues have been linked directly to fracking. It has been blamed for air pollution, groundwater contamination, health problems and surface water pollution as well as presenting a risk of sinkholes as man-made earthquakes. Huge amounts of water are used in fracking and must be transported to the site at significant environmental cost and an increased number of droughts in and around areas in which fracking has taken place have been observed.

France was the first country in the world to ban hydraulic fracturing for the exploration and exploitation of shale gas and oil in July 2011. Learn more.

Freegle

Freegle is a UK-wide umbrella organisation, formed in 2009 that aims to increase reuse and reduce landfill by offering a free internet-based service where people can give away and ask for things that would otherwise be thrown away. Fish

If you are going to buy fish then please try to buy conscientiously. The fact is we are taking too many fish from our oceans. Try to buy fish from a retailer that can tell you where the fish was bought - and buy fish that aren't under threat.

Look out for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue ecolabel - check out their Sustainable seafood product finder or The Marine Conservation Society's ratings.

You can also find some helpful information on the Greenpeace website.

Local suppliers of fish include Jems Fresh Fish and Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales.
