Flexible plastic packaging

Yes flexible plastic packaging can be recycled. Initially lots of flexible plastic packaging, e.g. biscuit and cake wrappers, crisp packets, kids food pouches, etc was collected by individuals and small organisations like the Green Centre through a national scheme run by Terracycle. The schemes were sponsored by companies like Walkers, Hovis, etc. This has now changed. The collection has been upscaled and instead supermarkets are now running schemes to accept flexible plastic.

Where
You can choose which ever supermarket you want to recycle your flexible plastic packaging with BUT they all accept different packaging AND they all recycle your packaging in different places, including overseas.

The only supermarket we recommend is:

  • we recommend the  Co-op.
  • they provide a comprehensive list
  • they recycle their plastic with Jayplas, a company based in the UK.

How?

  • First you MUST, MUST, MUST check with the supermarket you intend to recycle your flexible plastic with to see what they accept. They are all different.
  • Make sure it is CLEAN and there is NO FOOD / OTHER PRODUCTS left inside the packaging. When we accepted flexible packaging we had countless packets with crips, nuts, etc still inside!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The new flexible plastic recycling programme in supermarkets is funded through the Flexible Plastic Fund.
