Tools

Yes tools can be re-used and recycled. 

REUSE
Where?
If you have tools which are in good working order that you no longer use or have more than two of the same tool;

  • You can donate them to Workaid a charity which tackles poverty in developing countries by supplying disadvantaged people with the tools they need to earn a living. If you have tools to donate, please phone 01494 775220 or email admin@workaid.org and you will be put in touch with your nearest area organiser.
  • You can donate them to a charity shop.
  • You can sell them at a car boot sale or use a number of online platforms including Gumtree, Friday-Ad, Facebook selling pages and other online platforms. 
  • You can also give them away for free through Freegle. 

How?
Workaid accept a wide variety of tools including;

  • carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc
  • bricklaying, masonry, etc
  • motor mechanics, welding, metal work, blacksmith, etc
  • gardening, electrical tools, lawnmowers, hosepipes, etc
  • sewing, knitting, upholstery, leatherwork  etc.

RECYCLE
Where?
If your tools are broken and can not be repaired they can be recycled in the following way;

  • Please take them to the Brighton Household Waste & Recycling site on Wilson Avenue or the Hove Household Waste & Recycling site on the Old Shoreham Road. See here for exact locations and opening times.For more details contact City Clean on 01273 292929.

How?
Separate your tools according to the following categories and place in the appropriate container;

  • Electrical, e.g. drill, sander, etc
  • Metal, e.g. saw, hammer, etc
  • Wood, e.g. mallet, etc
  • Place everything else in the general waste

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Workaid collect unwanted items from all over the UK, repair them and send them to vocational training projects, mostly in East Africa.  They have an efficient network of 100 volunteers who co-ordinate tools collections. 
  • Every year, Workaid helps over 9,000 people break the cycle of poverty and rebuild their lives. They assist projects working with orphans, street children, unemployed teenagers, disabled people, people living with HIV/AIDS, widows and refugees.
