Magpie Recycling started in 1990 at Hanover Community Centre with just three volunteers collecting drink cans, glass, and office paper from a handful of local residents and businesses, including universities. Beginning with only 17 subscribers, the initiative steadily grew, eventually serving 2,000 customers.
With the introduction of new legislation requiring all councils to recycle plastic, tubs and trays, foil and food waste by March 2026, Magpie have ended their recycling programme as Brighton and Hove City Council prepare to take over.
