Baby Wipes

No baby wipes can not be recycled.

Johnson's Baby launched the "Wipe Out Waste" scheme in partnership with Terracycle in May 2011. Johnson’s Baby was the first baby wipes manufacturer to take the lead to recycle its packaging but that scheme has now ended. 

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Baby wipes are causing hundreds of thousands of blockages in the UK sewer system and costing the country £100m every year, according to a new report.
  • There have been numerous campaigns run throughout the UK asking people not to flush baby wipes. only flush “the three Ps: pee, paper and poo”.
  • Some companies still describe their wipes as flushable despite the fact they cause so many problems.

Babybel packaging

Yes Babybel packaging can be recycled.

  • This scheme is run by Terracycle. There is a local collection point at Aldrington C of E Primary SchoolHove, Eridge Road, BN3 7QD.
  • Drop-off point is inside at the school office between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday during school term time.

If you have no further use for your bag and it is still in reasonable condition and useable, e.g. with out holes, zips & handles still working then you can donate it to the Green Centre or to a charity shop.

Where?

  • Put into any of the textiles recycling bins located around Brighton and Hove.
  • Put in textiles recycling bin found at either of the council Household Waste and Recycling sites at Old Shoreham Road in Hove or Wilson Avenue in Brighton. 

How?

  • Please check all pockets for personal possessions and remove.
  • Please make sure the bag is reasonably clean. 

Batteries - Household

REDUCE RECYCLE

DID YOU KNOW?

  • It is estimated that we throw away over 600m batteries in the UK each year.
  • Only 27% of batteries are recycled in the UK, resulting in more than 20,000 tonnes of battery waste straight to the landfill.
  • In the first instance please consider using rechargeable batteries. They are a viable environmental alternative to disposable batteries as they can be recharged up to 1,000 times and are much more powerful.  The USBCELL battery can be used in normal battery applications and can be recharged simply by plugging it into a USB port.

BBQ - Disposable

No disposable BBQs can not be recycled. Before disposing of your disposable BBQ make sure it is fully extinguished and then put in your general household waste.

REUSE
Consider using a portable BBQ instead of a disposable one as it can be used again. If cleaned and stored appropriately it can be used over many years.

BBQ - Metal

Yes your metal BBQ can be reused and recycled. 

REUSE

  • If your metal BBQ is still in good condition and useable you can sell it at a car boot sale or use a number of online platforms including Gumtree, Friday-Ad, Facebook selling pages and other online platforms. 
  • You can use your old BBQ as a planter in the garden or on a balcony.
  • You can also give it away for free through Freegle.

  • Please make sure you have removed any waste from the BBQ, e.g food, charcoal, etc

Bicycles

RE-USE RECYCLE

Yes can be reused and recycled.

REUSE

  • "Mike the bike" is selling bicycles at Shabitat, all the bikes are recycled and serviced. Find them on Saunders Road Depot, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN2 4AY or call on  01273 677577.
  • The "Re-Cycle" project gathers second-hand bicycles and ships them to various African countries. They teach local people to repair and maintain them as a trade.
  • "Cranks" are a not-for-profit organisation that teaches you how to fix your bike for free. They accept old bikes and parts for donations.
  • Re:cycle is a student-run co-op at the University of Sussex. They recover abandoned or donated bikes, restore them and rent them to students for a cheap price to encourage cycling to university.

  • The average family in the UK throws away 6 trees worth of paper every year.
  • Each ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil and 4,000 kilowatts of energy which is enough to power a house for a year.

Bottle Tops - plastic

Yes some plastic bottle tops can be recycled.

Where?

  • Some lids can be included in Brighton and Hove Council Recycling including both your kerbside and communal bins. Please read the instructions below very carefully as there are different instructions for different lids.
  • Lids from Tetra Paks must be recycled in dedicated Tetra Pak bins throughout Brighton and Hove.

How?

  • Milk bottle tops must be removed fromm the bottle and PUT INSIDE the bottle once washed. The reason it is put inside is because the thread of the plastic milk bottle is not very strong and when baled the lids will simply fly off.
  • Other bottle tops must be placed BACK ON the bottle once the bottle has been washed.
  • Tops from Tetra Paks can also be placed BACK ON once the Tetra Pak has been washed and squashed but these must be recycled in dedicated Tetra Pak bins throughout Brighton & Hove.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • It is estimated that an average of 35.8 million plastic bottles are used EVERY DAY in the UK, but only 19.8 million are recycled each day. This means there are on average 16 million plastic bottles a day are not being recycled.
  • 8 million tonnes of the world’s plastics end up in our oceans each year, creating a garbage patch three times the size of France. Plastics from items such as carrier bags and bottles that end up in our oceans kill around 1,000,000 sea creatures every year.
  • Many types of plastics are recyclable but it takes up to 500 years for plastic to fully decompose.

  • The local scrap metal company that The Green Centre uses for brass recycling is a family-run company called Argyle Metals Ltd. Their phone number is 01273 680559, and they can be found at Argyle Hall, Campbell Rd, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4RA.

How?

  • Must be brass. 
  • If you are using Argles you will need to have an account and will need to recycle a minimum value of £20.

Please note: Bricks which are part of business waste which is any waste from commercial, trade or business activities can not be disposed of at Household Waste and Recycling sites. This includes any waste from domestic properties used for profit (for example landlords taking waste from a rented property) and waste that is being removed for payment.

Council staff have the right to inspect any waste entering the recycling sites and if they suspect your waste is business waste you will be turned away.

  • BRITA has an in-store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores including:

    • Argos at 157/162 Western Road, Brighton
    • Robert Dyas at 74 Western Road, Brighton
    • Robert Dyas, 96 George Street, Hove

    Other retailers which offer the service include Cargo, Comet, Sainsbury's, Homebase, ASDA, and Makro.

    The BRITA branded bins will be located near to the existing water filter displays in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.

How?

  • Dry the used filters by shaking off excess water, and leaving them in a dry place for at least 3 days.

Yes BT phones can be recycled.

Where?

  • Call 0800 800 150 and let them know what you want to return. They will then send you a pre-paid posting bag.
  • Then pack all equipment, including cables, into the original box or another box or wrap in bubble wrap.
  • Place all in the posting bag and then seal the bag.
  • Then peel off the address label and bar-code and stick them on the posting bag provided.
  • Then drop it off at your local Post Office.

Business Waste

Yes business waste can be recycled however you must use a registered waste carrier. 

PLEASE NOTE
Business waste is any waste from commercial, trade or business activities. This includes any waste from domestic properties used for profit (for example landlords taking waste from a rented property) and waste that is being removed for payment.

  • If you use part of your home to run your business then any waste from that part is business waste.
  • Business waste also includes any waste that comes from:
    • construction
    • demolition
    • industry
    • agriculture

RECYCLE
Where?

There are many companies who deal with commercial waste throughout the UK. But not all of them recycle the waste. Whoever you choose to pay to remove your commercial waste it would be supportive to the environment if you choose a company which recycles as much as possible.

Local companies include: 

  • Brighton Paper Round (01273 685628) who recycle all the commercial waste they collect.
  • Brighton Waste (01273 410777), who recycle cardboard, hardcore, metal and paper.
  • Green Acre Recycling (01273 600909), who recycle glass, hardcore, metal and wood.
  • Team Waste (01342 711941) who recycle cardboard and glass only.

Companies who offer their services throughout the UK include:

  • Biffa (01273 564064), who recycle paper and cardboard. 
  • PHS (O870 241 7491), who try to recycle as much as they can but cannot guarantee this.
  • Sita (01342 716388), who recycle cardboard, glass, paper, plastic, tin and wood.
  • Veolia (02392 666999), who recycle a range of items.

How?

Since October 2007 there are new directives in relation to commercial waste [listed below], for further information about this see the Environment Agency webpages.

  • keep waste to a minimum by doing everything you reasonably can to prevent, reuse, recycle or recover waste
  • sort and store waste safely and securely
  • complete a waste transfer note for each load of waste that leaves your premises
  • check if your waste carrier is registered to dispose of waste
  • not allow the waste carrier to dispose of your waste illegally
