Yes water usage can be reduced through reuse. 

REDUCE

• Showers are the biggest water user in the house using 25%. People generally spend seven-and-a-half minutes in the shower. 87% of people do not exceed ten minutes on their daily shower. A shower is better than a bath. A full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water, while taking a five-minute shower uses 10 to 25 gallons. 
• Toilets use 22% of water.  Make sure you have a low flush toilet, that is 4.5 litres or under. If you can't afford a low energy flush toilet then place a "hippo" bag (available from the water board) in the cistern.  Better still, fill a plastic milk container with water and place that in the cistern.

REUSE

• You can reuse your "grey water", that's the water from your bath, dishwasher, shower, washing machine, etc.  This makes up almost half of all residential waste water and can be useed for watering the garden and washing the car for example.

• BRITA has an in-store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores. Use their store locator to find your nearest one. Brighton & Hove locations include;

  • Robert Dyas, 96 George Street, Hove

  Other retailers which offer the service include Cargo, Comet, Sainsbury's, Homebase, ASDA, and Makro.

  The BRITA branded bins will be located near to the existing water filter displays in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.

How?

• The BRITA Recycling scheme will accept ALL brands of water filter.
• Dry the used filters by shaking off excess water, and leaving them in a dry place for at least 3 days.

Please note: Window panes and frames which are part of business waste which is any waste from commercial, trade or business activities can not be disposed of at Household Waste and Recycling sites. This includes any waste from domestic properties used for profit (for example landlords taking waste from a rented property) and waste that is being removed for payment.

Council staff have the right to inspect any waste entering the recycling sites and if they suspect your waste is business waste you will be turned away.

• A limited amount of wood - six small builder’s bags for each household each month - from home improvements or DIY can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling sites. 
• There are 2 different wood recycling containers. Please ask staff for advice.

N.B The recycling sites are for household waste from city residents only. Business waste will not be accepted.

DID YOU KNOW? 

• The most important benefit of wood reuse and recycling is that it saves trees. Some argue that replanting trees compensates for those that have been cut down however it takes a long time for trees to grown to maturity so it is better not to cut them down in the first place.
• Reusing and recycling wood reduces energy costs. When making new products out of virgin materials, much energy is used to extract and process those materials, which includes burning fossil fuels. Products that are manufactured using recycled materials reduce the need for virgin materials, thus saving money and the energy required to extract and process those materials.
• In reality, the majority of waste wood that gets recycled is chipped and the chips used to make chipboard or burnt in power stations.

• Please reuse wrapping paper as many times as possible.
• Please be careful when unwrapping gifts so you can preserve the wrapping paper to reuse.

Please do the scrunch test first to identify your wrapping paper; if when you scrunch it up, it stays scrunched, then it is paper and can be recycled. If it bounces back it is plastic and/or foil and cannot be recycled.
